Autism iHelp is a vocabulary teaching tool created by a collaboration between parents of a child with Autism and a speech-language pathologist. This app was developed to address the specific needs for language intervention in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, emphasizing their unique learning strengths and challenges with expressive vocabulary.
The application offers several features designed to facilitate learning:
- 24 Real-World Photos: Research indicates that children with Autism often respond more favorably to actual photographs rather than illustrations, as they tend to be visual learners. The carefully selected images correspond to established expressive language milestones and are grouped into three sets of eight, minimizing potential over-stimulation and allowing for more effective comprehension at a manageable pace.
- Labeling Options: Each photo includes labels which can be toggled off. This flexibility accommodates children who may have a preference for written words. After navigating through eight images, the app presents an option to retry, reinforcing repetition as a critical part of learning new vocabulary.
- Randomized Image Presentation: Users can choose to display images in a random order, enhancing generalization and concrete understanding of vocabulary.
- Audio Options: The app provides two voice choices—male and female—when audio feedback is selected, creating a more relatable experience. Additionally, there is an option to disable audio, encouraging children to verbalize the learned words independently.
- Learning Enhancement Activities: Two interactive activities are included, presented in a game-like format. These tasks require children to match words with pictures or identify the correct word from multiple choices, reinforcing vocabulary retention while integrating auditory and visual memory. Progress reports are available, allowing caregivers to track improvements over three sessions for each activity.
The Autism iHelp Home app features commonly encountered household items related to dining, bathroom, and family room activities. These familiar objects serve as practical aids for requesting, labeling, and enhancing communication skills.
The tagline “with Autism iHelp…..it gets better,” encapsulates the intended positive impact of this app on the communication journey of children with Autism.
